Automated Runway Surface Condition
Assessment and Reporting
SnowWize™ provides an automatic runway surface condition assessment and reporting of runway contaminants (such as snow, ice, slush, frost and rain water) for improved safety and operational efficiency. It allows airports to monitor their runways, assess and report in real-time parameters of depth, type and coverage during rapidly changing weather conditions.
Investigations have found that many runway excursions were associated with shortfalls in the accuracy and timeliness of assessment and reporting methods of runway surface conditions. In the wake of a fatal runway excursion accident occurred in 2005, the aviation industry has acknowledged the need to develop adequate procedures and guidance addressing the operations on contaminated runways. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has worked on the development of a harmonized, New Global Reporting Format (GRF) for assessing and reporting runway surface conditions in a timely and more accurate manner, based on the FAA's TALPA RCAM. The standardized matrix that has been developed consists of an empiric, non-subjective code that is clearly communicated to all stakeholders.
SnowWize harnesses the advantages of automation in favor of runway surface condition assessment and reporting, therefore becoming especially valuable for airports ahead of ICAO's enhanced GRF for runway surface conditions, applicable in November 2021.
